It Doesn’t Have To Be Complicated: Solving Team Challenges With Simplicity

Helping your team get their stuff together doesn’t have to require big, fancy, complicated solutions. Processes don’t need to feel complex to be valuable and thoughtful. Job descriptions don’t need to be a million pages long to be important to the team.

One of the most common inefficiencies I run into with my clients is (unnecessarily) complicated ways of doing things. The idea that a solution needs to be complicated or expensive to be worth it.

Spoiler Alert: It doesn’t need to be either! Less can truly be MORE.

Picture This: You’re at the helm of your team, steering through the choppy waters of inefficiency. You’ve got deadlines looming, projects piling up, and somewhere in the mix, there’s a bottleneck slowing everyone down. What do you do?

Here’s the scoop: the key to untangling those knots of inefficiency often lies in simplicity. Yep, you heard me right—simple, straightforward solutions that nip the problem in the bud without breaking the bank or turning your team’s workflow into a Rubik’s cube.

Slow Down and Evaluate

Take a moment to think about it. How many times have you discovered that a seemingly Herculean task could be tackled with nothing more than a little tweak here and there?

I once worked with a company who were struggling with cash management and weren’t invoicing some projects for weeks or months after a project was done. Why? Because they were waiting on subcontractors to submit invoices before sending them off to customers. Yet, when we looked at the data, subcontractor invoices matched perfectly with their purchase orders anyway! The solution? Cut out the waiting period and invoice a client once their own project close process was complete. This was a simple way to solve the problem without adding expenses.

Another client I worked with was ready to create an entirely new role and hire a full-time person with the hopes of solving some of their collaboration and oversight issues in their project management processes. When we looked at where the breakdown in collaboration was actually happening, it turned out that they just needed to grant existing team members access to a specific system. Sure, they increased their license costs but, compared to a full-time salary? Small potatoes.

Invest Smart, Not Hard

When it comes to tackling challenges and trying to solve inefficiencies, don’t underestimate the power of simplicity. Take a moment to look at the issue, identify the root cause, and then ask yourself, “What’s the simplest way to tackle this, without dropping the ball on quality or goals?”

Sometimes, the answer will involve opening up the purse strings or bringing in new team members. But – and here’s the crucial part – only do so when it’s crystal clear that the solution hits the bullseye dead-on. Don’t toss money at a problem in the dark—shine a light on it, figure out what’s really going on, and then, and only then, make your move.
