Should You Hire a VA or a Marketing Strategist to Help With Content?

One of the most common questions I hear from business owners is:

“Can my VA help with content and social media?”

The short answer?
Yes… but only if you have a few key things in place.

If you’ve ever felt like delegating your marketing is harder than just doing it yourself, or you’ve hired someone and still didn’t get the results you hoped for, this might be the reason.

Let’s break it down.

First: Do You Need a Strategist or an Executor?

Before you hand off your content to a virtual assistant (or anyone else), you need to get clear on the type of support you actually need.

  • A strategist helps you figure out what to say, who you're talking to, and how to structure your content to get leads or brand engagement.

  • An executor (like a VA) helps you follow the plan, once that plan is already clear.

If your VA doesn't have a strategy to follow, you'll either end up micromanaging everything or be disappointed in the results.

3 Things You Need in Place Before a VA Can Help With Content

A VA can absolutely help with marketing—but they shouldn’t be the ones building your content strategy from scratch. For that to work well, you need:

1. Clarity on Your Ideal Customer

Who are you creating content for? What are their pain points, motivations, and objections?

2. Clarity on What You're Selling

What exactly are you offering? What transformation or result are you promising, and what makes your offer worth paying attention to?

3. Clarity on Your Brand and Content Style

What should your content look and sound like? What tone, values, or themes should it follow? Even a simple swipe file or mood board can help here.

What a VA Can Do (Once You Have Clarity)

If you’ve got those three things in place, your VA can absolutely help with:

  • Scheduling and formatting social media posts

  • Repurposing content from videos, blogs, or podcasts

  • Editing podcast or YouTube episodes

  • Drafting newsletters or email campaigns

  • Designing simple graphics or pulling content into templates

  • Using tools like ChatGPT to help you scale (if trained properly)

And if they're on my team? We train them to do all of this in a way that matches your voice and gets results—without the cringe factor.

Don’t Skip the Strategy

I get it—strategy can feel expensive, and it’s tempting to just hire someone to start executing right away. I’ve made that mistake too.

I once hired someone to post for me before I’d gotten clear on what my brand actually sounded like. Surprise: It didn’t work. The content flopped, and I had to backtrack and build the foundations I skipped.

If your content isn’t getting traction—and it’s not because you’re inconsistent or overloaded, but because it’s just not working—you may be missing the strategy piece.

The Bottom Line

If you're asking whether a VA can help with content, ask yourself this first:

Do I need someone to build the plan? Or help me follow through on the plan?

If it's the latter, a VA is a great fit.
If it's the former, you need a strategist first.

Once you're clear on what you need, it’s so much easier to hire the right person—and finally get your content working for you, not against you.
