Why You’re Busy But Still Not Hitting Your Goals
If you’re running a business and feeling like things are messy, chaotic, or just plain off —
You’re not alone.
Whether you’re a solopreneur or leading a team of 20, 50, or even 100 people, the symptoms of being at capacity often look the same:
Disorganization
Low performance
A lack of accountability
Feeling overwhelmed and stretched thin
You’ve got people doing things. You’re doing things.
But the outcomes? Not matching the effort.
So when someone comes to me with that swirl — that “we’re doing a lot, but it’s not working” energy — this is the very first thing I’d evaluate.
I’m not talking about a full operational overhaul or deep-dive leadership analysis.
I’m talking about a focused audit on one thing that gives us a fast pulse check on where the disconnect really is.
But first, let’s get clear on what this audit is not about.
Productivity ≠ Busyness
A lot of people think productivity means checking more things off a list.
But that’s not how I define it.
To me, productivity is about ROI — the return you get on your time and energy.
It’s not about how much you’re doing.
It’s about what your effort is actually producing.
You can be busy all day and still not move the business forward.
And if that’s your current reality, something’s misaligned.
Why This Type of Audit Works
When I do this kind of check-in with a client, we’re not just looking at whether people are “getting stuff done.”
We’re looking at whether the things being done actually support the goals you’ve set.
Because more often than not, there’s a gap between what people say the priorities are…
And what actually fills their calendars, inboxes, and to-do lists.
Here’s what that can look like:
A goal that’s no longer relevant because your business model or market shifted
A bloated process that no longer supports the outcome you want
A team that’s executing tasks that don’t map to any current objective
Sometimes the misalignment starts at the goal level.
Sometimes it’s on the task side.
Either way, the outcome is the same: you’re working hard and getting nowhere.
What to Do Instead
If you’re feeling the swirl, try this:
Look at your calendar.
What are you actually spending time on?Look at your inbox and to-do list.
What kinds of requests and distractions are showing up over and over again?Compare all of that to your stated goals.
Are the things you’re doing helping you make real progress?
If not, it’s not a motivation problem.
It’s not a bandwidth problem.
It’s a misalignment problem.
And while this audit is just the first step, it gives you a clear direction on where to dig deeper — whether that’s your goals, your processes, or your team structure.
